What Is the Purpose of Thumb Holes in Running Shirts?

Thumb holes keep long sleeves from riding up during repeated arm movement and extend the cuff over part of the hand in cool weather.

The key is sleeve length. With the thumb inserted, the child should be able to bend the elbow and swing the arms without pulling from the thumb toward the shoulder. If this happens, the sleeve is too short or the thumb hole sits too low.

Getting the Thumb-Hole Position Right

A thumb hole should sit where the thumb naturally meets the hand. The wearer should not need to stretch or twist the cuff to reach it.

When checking the sample, test three movements: arms straight, elbows bent, and running arm swings. Watch for cuff twisting, pressure around the thumb, or diagonal pulling along the sleeve.

For kids sizing, check the smallest, base, and largest sizes. Do not use the same thumb-hole position across every size.

The Thumb Opening Needs Extra Reinforcement

The thumb opening is stretched every time the hand passes through the cuff. Check both ends of the opening for loose stitches, bulky seams, or hard thread ends that can rub against the hand.

After repeatedly inserting and removing the thumb, the opening should return close to its original shape. If it stays stretched or curls outward, adjust the fabric recovery or cuff construction before bulk production.

Customizing This Kids Running Top

For a custom version, define these four measurements in your tech pack:

  • Finished sleeve length
  • Cuff length
  • Thumb-opening length
  • Distance from sleeve end to thumb opening

You can also change the body fit, fabric, color, and branding. If the fabric changes, recheck the cuff because different stretch and recovery can change how the thumb opening fits.
